In this moving story of love, joy, and pardon, a documentary filmmaker travels to her parents' homeland of Cambodia to learn of their traumatic past escaping the Khmer Rouge regime. Born on Cambodian New Year in a Thai refugee camp, Socheata Poeuv never knew exactly how she ended up there. NEW YEAR BABY documents her father's astounding heroism and her family's 25-year secret as Poeuv travels to Cambodia for the first time, armed with a camera and an arsenal of curiosity. As she discovers her family's story and retraces their journey to America, she doesn't realize how quite unprepared she is to learn of certain things about their experience. Candid, open-hearted and powerful, NEW YEAR BABY is a window into the lives of six Cambodians who escaped the Khmer Rouge and lived to became Americans.
